Laredo police announced that they gave out over 1,500 citations during the recent Click It or Ticket campaign.

The enforcement period was between May 22 and June 4, where officers conducted 981 traffic stops and issued 1,546 citations.

“Of those 1,546 citations, 193 were issued for occupants who were not wearing a seatbelt and 46 were for child safety seat violations,” LPD said in a statement.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration officials report that wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of dying in a car crash by 45% and up to 60% if riding in a pickup truck.

Texas Department of Transportation crash data states there were 1,258 fatalities in motor vehicle accidents as a result of not wearing a seat belt.

State law requires everyone in a vehicle to buckle up or face fines and court costs of up to $200. Children younger than 8 years old must be in a child safety seat or booster seat unless they’re taller than 4 feet, 9 inches.
