A United ISD band teacher accused of driving over 1,500 miles to Virginia with the intent of having sex with a teenage girl has been placed on administrative leave.

“Law enforcement authorities notified the United Independent School District that district employee David Ortiz was arrested out of state on serious charges,” the district said in a statement.

“Due to the ongoing criminal investigation, the district cannot provide additional information at this time except to inform the public that Mr. Ortiz was placed on administrative leave and cannot enter district property at this time.”

Ortiz, 32, was charged on Friday, Jan. 12 with production of child sexual abuse material, use of communication device to solicit a minor, attempted indecent liberties with a minor. He also faces eight counts of use of a communication device to solicit a minor (second or subsequent offense).

Ortiz is a music teacher with LBJ High School.

Authorities in Fairfax County in Fairfax, Virginia said that the case dates back to December, when Ortiz began communicating with someone he believed to be a juvenile.

Instead, Ortiz was talking with a detective in the Fairfax County Police Department’s Child Exploitation Unit whom he believed was 14 years old, authorities said.

Fairfax police said Ortiz mentioned he was going to begin making the trip to Virginia on Jan. 10. Investigators met him two days later when he arrived and took him into custody.
