(UPDATE 3/1/21 @ 8:44 p.m.): Box Elder Police said in a press release Monday evening that the original text claiming there was an active shooter at Douglas High School was received by Meade County Dispatch at 5:32 p.m.
“Through information already obtained, we are confident there is not, and never was, a threat to any of the Douglas Schools,” Box Elder Police wrote in the release.
Box Elder Police, along with Pennington and Meade County Sheriff’s Offices, are investigating the incident.
(UPDATE: 3/1/21 @ 7:17 p.m.): Box Elder Police confirms that a text was received by 911 stating that there was an active shooter at Douglas High School. Box Elder Police, along with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Department, National Park Service (Rushmore), South Dakota Highway Patrol, Rapid City Fire Department and Box Elder Fire Department, responded to the scene.
Upon entering Douglas High School, law enforcement found no signs of an active shooter event. Some students and staff were present, but complied with law enforcement and were safe. Out of an abundance of caution, all Douglas School District buildings were searched.
Box Elder Police Chief Jason Dubbs stated that they were still investigating the cell number that sent the 911 text.
BOX ELDER, S.D. — Law enforcement responded to a 911 call for an active shooter at the Douglas School District on Monday evening. Police have cleared students in all buildings and have determined they are safe.
As of 6:59 p.m., all district buildings have been swept and are clear.
