The student, who was in the parking lot, was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to Coroner J. Todd Hardee.

Officials expressed condolences for the student, his family and his friends.

“Like most 16-year olds, they were trying to be the best version of themselves, and tragically that was taken away from them,” Newman said.

The Darlington County School District has made changes in the days after the shooting.

In the immediate aftermath, officials briefly placed schools in the area on a secure status, meaning no one could enter or exit buildings. By 2:30 p.m., all secure statuses were lifted and schools were dismissed at normal times.

The Darlington-Lee Adult Education campus — which also hosts the Darlington County Intervention School  will be shut down through Oct. 13, reopening Oct. 16, Newman said.

The school district also moved a Darlington High School football game from Darlington to the away team’s field.

Resources such as counseling will be available for the students and staff who were affected by the violence, the superintendent said.

Area schools have seen an increased police presence this week, and officials said conversations about increasing security in the future are ongoing.

They promised changes would be coming to Darlington County, but they said it started with the behavior of a few people in the community.

“You will see some changes coming to Darlington County. We’re going to slow this down. We’re going to get a grip on this somehow,” the sheriff said.

The first step, both he and Davis said, is apprehending the culprits of Tuesday’s shooting.
