Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the duo were attending to construction work in their yard when they got into an altercation.

“The son grabbed a spade and hacked the victim multiple times. The police and emergency services were called to the scene where they found the victim lying in a pool of blood. He was declared dead on the scene,” his statement read.

The victim’s son was arrested on the scene and a case of murder was opened.

“The circumstances that led to the brutal act are under investigation,” he said.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has condemned the incident and called on the public to resolve matters in a civil manner rather than resorting to violence.
