FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Cybersecurity continues to be a pressing matter in the U.S. as people’s data and personal information is always at risk for someone trying to steal it. And it can impact anyone.

“Well, it’s very important because everything we do these days is online. Every single thing we do. So you got to protect yourself.” said Eric Erdmann, a co-owner of Information Management Systems.

Recently, Minnesota State University Moorhead has been dealing with this issue as they were hit with a ransomware attack. Jeremy Straub with the NDSU Institute for Cyber Security Education says protected information at schools is big money opportunities for hackers.

“So universities are very enticing targets for people with nefarious intent. The reason is that they are because you have so many people, you have a lot of people who usually have pristine credit information that maybe haven’t used a lot of the credentials.” said Straub.

Across the U.S., there have been over 3,200 data breaches last year impacting around 353 million users according to data from And the systems being used to protect people and businesses continue to get more and more complicated to ensure safety. Erdmann says the landscape has changed drastically over the years when it comes to protecting data.

“I bet over the last five years we’ve added four, five different services on top of what we’re already providing. Basic services 10,15 years ago was put in a business grade firewall and anti-virus set up.” said Erdmann.

According to data from Statista, there was a 58% increase of data compromises from 2022 to 2023.
