Local News: Former CSADV is now ?Safe Place? (8/19/20) | #facebookdating | #tinder | #pof | romancescams | #scams

PLYMOUTH CO. ? A familiar service in the area has a new name ? Safe Place.

Effective July 1, CSADV became ?Safe Place.?

We felt it was time to move forward with a name that would better reflect what we do and it?s short, simple and easy to remember,? said Domestic Abuse Advocate Cathy Van Maanen, who works out of the Le Mars office. ?Our core services and values remain the same.?

The new logo colors represent domestic abuse (purple) and sexual assault (teal).

?Safe place is just that ? a safe place for survivors of domestic abuse to receive information, support and advocacy whether that is for a stay in our shelter (in Sioux City) or outreach services in Plymouth and Woodbury counties. I have heard from adults as well as children that they like our new name. It is simply stated and they can understand what we do,? Van Maanen said.

The services are available to anyone who has experienced domestic abuse or teen dating violence, as well as children who have witnessed violence in their home.

?We do not discriminate in any way. Folks from the LGBTQIA community are welcome,? Van Maanen said. ?We are a safe place for anyone who has experienced domestic abuse or sexual assault.?

She explained the shelter, located in Sioux City, provides a safe place for survivors and their children to stay as they are transitioning and considering their options. The shelter also serves sexual assault survivors.

?Locally, we utilize hotels for emergencies,? she said.

Survivors have several options in how to contact Safe Place, including its Facebook page, its website www.safeplacesiouxland.org or by calling 712-546-6764 for Plymouth County and 712-258-7233 for Woodbury County. Survivors can reach out anytime, day or night.

?During the COVID-19 epidemic, we are trying to do as much as possible via phone, e-mail, Zoom and other social media. We will assess safety for each individual situation,? Van Maanen said.

Why the need for a service such as Safe Place?

?Sadly, domestic abuse pervades every community. One in 4 women and girls will experience abuse by an intimate partner in her lifetime. Men can experience domestic abuse as well and we do provide services to male victims,? she said. ?People need a safe place to talk about their experiences and receive support with dignity and respect. We do that. We are on the frontline of saving lives.?

New posters and brochures are being distributed. If anyone would like some for their business, church or agency, call 546-6764 and Van Maanen will see the information is provided.
