Three local students have earned nearly $16,000 in scholarship money for their efforts dealing with cybersecurity.
Human Al-Shami is a high school junior studying at Arkansas Connections Academy, which is based in Magnolia.
Al-Shami founded the Magnolia Cybersecurity Club. Along with members Mohammed Alroobi and Nasif Ahmed, they competed in Cyberstart America.
Alroobi is a freshman at Magnolia High School, while Nasif is a freshman at the Arkansas Connections Academy.
Al-Shami led the team through the Cyberstart America competition and they were recognized as Scholars and Scholars with Honors respectively.
Al-Shami attained status of Scholar with Honors this year, winning over $9,000 in scholarships to pursue advanced cybersecurity training with the SANS Institute.
Nasif and Mohammed were qualified as Scholars this year, winning over $3,400 in scholarships to pursue advanced cybersecurity training with the SANS Institute.
In total, the team won over $15,800 in scholarships.
The competition is nation-wide and the Magnolia team competed among a pool of over 40,000 students, being among the top 1% of participants in the case of achieving rank of scholar with honors and among the top 5% in the case of achieving rank of scholars.
The National Cyber Scholarship Foundation recognizes high school students who have demonstrated exceptional cybersecurity prowess and who wish to pursue a career in a growing field in critical need of their talent. The NCSF mission is to i
dentify and develop the next generation of cyber professionals. Each and every student who participated in this competition has the potential to develop their skills and build a successful career in cybersecurity.
There are several qualification pathways to gain a National Cyber Scholarship, including CyberStart America, a free online program that helps students discover their interest in cybersecurity and develop their talent and skills.
The NCSF offers $5 million in scholarships to top-ranking competitors. The highest-scoring eligible CyberStart players will become National Cyber Scholars and will be invited to participate in the Cyber Foundations Academy.

Students new to the field with a strong aptitude, as well as students with existing interest in the field, can use the platform to train and qualify as a National Cyber Scholar, giving them the opportunity to earn life-changing scholarship opportunities.
