A Northern California man has been sentenced to life in prison after killing a 64-year-old man accused of being a child molester in Burney Falls, Calif., in March 2021.

The Shasta County District Attorney’s Office says 46-year-old Donald Joseph Marquez has been sentenced to 15-years-to-life in prison after being found guilty of the second-degree murder of Mark Russell Anderson, 64, at his home in Burney on March 8, 2021.

According to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), Anderson died at the hospital 10 days after he was found brutally beaten in a trailer behind the Church of Christ in Burney. Court documents revealed that, on the night of March 8, 2021, Marquez told others he went to Anderson’s trailer behind the church to confront him about the alleged child molestation.

Investigators say Marquez asked Anderson if he molested children and Anderson allegedly replied, “Yeah. So what?” They say that’s when Marquez began to repeatedly punch Anderson to unconsciousness. They say Marquez waited for Anderson to regain consciousness before beating him again. After the beating, Anderson was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Redding where he remained in a coma until dying on March 18.

A few days later, the SCSO says two people came forward saying Marquez assaulted Anderson after learning that he was an accused child molester. On the same day, detectives served a search warrant at Marquez’s home on Sugar Pine Street and contacted him. Marquez reportedly told detectives he was inside Anderson’s trailer the day of the assault, and the he “remembers punching Anderson two or three times with his right hand that night.” He was then placed under arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail.
