MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday urged the Philippine Army (PA) to improve its cybersecurity capabilities.

At the 127th Anniversary of the PA in Tarlac, Marcos, through Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, said that the Army must be able to adapt to emerging threats.

“Our ability to counter cyber threats is also of great importance. Given this emerging threat, I urge the Philippine Army to bolster its cybersecurity capabilities, to keep up with the rapid technological advancements, and help with maintaining the country’s security and stability,” said Marcos, addressing the PA troops.

Marcos has given a similar order to the Philippine National Police, urging them to rebuild its anti-cybercrime unit.

The President’s order comes amid a string of cyber attacks against several government websites, including the Philippine Coast Guard and the House of Representatives.

According to Marcos, the Army must be prepared for different missions.

“We continue to boost our Army’s morale, efficiency and responsiveness through continuous capacity building initiatives, rigorous training, and education activities and other meritorious pursuits,” said Marcos.

Marcos is unable to attend the Anniversary as he is experiencing flu-like symptoms.
