Maternity Leave: Khalatkar Pitch For 1 Yr Maternity Leave & Child Insurance | | #childsafety | #kids | #chldern | #parents | #schoolsafey

Nagpur: Distinguished paediatrician Dr Vasant Khalatkar has been elected as the national president-elect of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), a leading a community of over 40,000 professionals.
During his one-year tenure as IAP president, Dr Khalatkar aims to prioritize the holistic well-being of mothers and children, with primary focus on extending maternity leaves to a substantial one-year duration.

Speaking exclusively to TOI, Dr Khalatkar emphasized the need to build on the previous success of extending maternity leave to six months. “It was the concerted effort of IAP and paediatricians nationwide that resulted in the extension of maternity leave to six months. Now, our next step is clear – children require maternal care for a minimum of one year. We will actively engage with government authorities to make it our mission to extend maternity leave to a full year,” said Dr Khalatkar.
For his hometown, Nagpur, he envisions the establishment of a large charitable hospital dedicated to the well-being of mothers and children, providing affordable services to underprivileged children from central India. “Enhancing child care in rural areas through a public-private partnership (PPP) model and fostering international collaborations to elevate the training standards of paediatricians is the need of the hour,” he said.
Child insurance is another pivotal aspect of Dr Khalatkar’s agenda. “We intend to collaborate with government officials and stakeholders to enhance child health by introducing insurance coverage for specially-abled children. My goal is to ensure that every newborn is brought under the umbrella of health insurance,” he affirmed.
Dr Khalatkar underscored the inclusivity of CIAP’s benefits, ensuring accessibility to paediatricians across the country, including those in rural and underserved areas. Prioritizing broader social reforms, he aims to combat child abuse and child labour.

Crop infestation to maternal risks: How tech helps
Wadhwani AI has developed a smartphone and AI-based early warning system for pest infestations in cotton crops. The system, called CottonAce, uses an Android application and an AI algorithm to analyze images from pest traps. It identifies and counts pests, determines the level of infestation, and provides actionable advice to farmers. The technology has helped reduce pesticide usage, save crops, and increase profits by 20%.
