The Head of the Presidential Council (PC), Muhammad Menfi, discussed during a call on Saturday with US Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland the security situation in Libya, mainly in the capital, Tripoli.

A statement by the PC said the two sides stressed the importance for all parties to commit to calm and put the national interest first.

The conversation touched upon ways to advance the political process in Libya and the constitutional track meetings taking place in Cairo.

They also stressed the importance for the members of the joint committee of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State to reach a consensus for holding the elections as soon as possible.

In the same context, Menfi reviewed in a separate call with the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General, Stephanie Williams on Saturday the current security situation in the capital and stressed the need for all parties to commit to securing the lives of civilians.

For her part, the UN Rep. provided a briefing on the efforts to proceed with the last round of the Cairo meetings planned between 12-19 June.

The joint committee of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State are meeting in the Egyptian capital, hoping to develop a consensual constitutional framework for holding comprehensive national elections that would end the current political crisis.
