Mexican government the target of major cyber attack | #government | #hacking | #cyberattack | #hacking | #aihp

The Mexican government confirms that it was hit by a major cyber attack. Hackers obtained data held by the military, including details about the president’s health.

Hundreds of thousands of Defense Ministry emails were among some six terabytes of data taken from the Mexican government by hackers calling themselves Guacamaya, the Spanish word for macaw.

The breach appears to have exploited a known weakness in the military’s IT system.

The data taken from the Defense Ministry includes information about criminal suspects, transcripts of communications and information about President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s health conditions.

The president confirmed the leaks were real but downplayed the hack, saying most of the information was already publicly known.

However, the hackers — who describe themselves as social justice “hacktivists” — say they uncovered evidence that the military is monitoring political and social movements in the country.
