DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand state cyber cell on Sunday registered a case against unidentified persons for having “unauthorised access to the official Facebook page of Uttarakhand police and then changing its display picture with an obscene image”.

The development came after the cyber cell received information on Sunday afternoon following comments by netizens expressing shock on social media.

One of the police officers privy to the matter, requesting anonymity, told TOI, “The incident happened around noon on Sunday. The changed DP remained in place for about an hour before the state police’s social media team regained control of the page and replaced it with the police insignia.”

Confirming the development, DSP cyber cell Ankush Mishra said, “We have registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC and the IT Act against unidentified accused in the matter. We will also contact Facebook to obtain the necessary information for tracing and apprehending the culprits.”

This is the first time an official social media account of the Uttarakhand police was hacked.
