- Edgar Junior, 50, was grabbed by officers as he got off a train at Reading station
- Police said he subjected a woman to a ‘brazen and persistent sexual assault’
This is the moment police arrested a sex offender as he tried to get off a train minutes after assaulting a lone female passenger.
Edgar Junior, 50, was grabbed by officers as he got off the Elizabeth Line at Reading after subjecting a woman to a ‘brazen and persistent sexual assault’ as she was travelling alone.
He had got on the train at Paddington and immediately started harassing a woman despite other passengers repeatedly telling him to leave her alone.
Junior assaulted the woman before she left the carriage and another passenger went over to reassure her until she left the train. Despite this the 50-year-old continued to approach other woman on board and harass them as well.
Officers were alerted to his behaviour and met the train at Reading station where he was arrested. Body cam footage shows British Transport Police arresting Junior, who is seen holding two shopping bags, swiftly after the train arrived.
Junior later pleaded guilty to sex assault at Reading Crown Court on January 12 and was sentenced to 20 months in prison last month.
He was also handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for ten years, preventing him from subjecting other women or girls to unwanted attention and drinking alcohol in a public place.
Detective Inspector Marvin Bruno said: ‘Junior is a disturbing individual who subjected a woman to a brazen and persistent sexual assault as she was travelling on a train alone, and the custodial sentence he’s been handed shows just how seriously these offences are taken.
‘I am thankful to the bystanders who recognised his revolting behaviour and stepped in to help, before reporting it to police immediately which allowed our officers to then intercept the train and arrest him.
‘I cannot emphasise enough the importance of saving our text number 61016 in your phone.
‘If you ever witness or experience behaviour like this you can text us discreetly and the message will come through in real time to our control room who can dispatch officers to a location if required. We will always take you seriously.’
A British Transport Police spokesman said: ‘A 50-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 months in prison after he sexually assaulted a woman on a train, following a British Transport Police investigation.
‘Body worn footage shows the moment BTP officers intercepted the train as it arrived at Reading station, identified the man, and swiftly arrested him.
