OREGON – More than $6 million will be heading to Oregon to enhance cybersecurity statewide.
Earlier this week, Oregon U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, and Oregon U.S. Representatives Val Hoyle, Earl Blumenauer, Suzanne Bonamici and Andrea Salinas announced the funding.
The money will be used for crucial cybersecurity upgrades for state and local governments.
This comes just about two months after the Oregon Department of Education was hacked. In that hack, the hackers accessed data that contained personal information for about 3.5 million Oregonians.
And earlier this year, Curry County was hit by a ransomware attack. This attack shut down all of its systems on April 26.
“Just this year Curry County was victim to a ransomware attack. I’m pleased that this funding will go toward helping local governments in Oregon protect against cyber attacks, particularly in our rural and coastal communities,” said Oregon U.S. Representative Val Hoyle. “We need to be reinvesting in our local communities to protect Oregonians’ privacy and ensure that important services are not sabotaged.”
