MSUM Dealing With Ransomware Attack On Servers Since February 1st | #ransomware | #cybercrime


MSUM has been dealing with a ransomware attack affecting some of the university’s servers for more than two weeks

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) – MSUM has been dealing with a ransomware attack affecting some of the university’s servers for more than two weeks.

The University says the IT team discovered that “a few servers” locked and encrypted by ransomware on February 1st.
MSUM is still working to actively restore all affected servers.
They University says its analysis indicates that the affected servers did not contain sensitive information like social security and credit card numbers.

Systems that are integrated with other universities appear to not be affected. No classes were cancelled due to the attack.
No other college or university in Minnesota appears to be affected.
Ransomware is often used to keep users from accessing information and holding it hostage for a ransom payment.
Minnesota State Colleges and Universities have a policy to not pay any ransom after ransomware attacks.
