Two locally based health systems were targets of ransomware attacks over the Thanksgiving holiday. At Ardent Health Services, some of the system’s 30 hospitals and more than 200 care sites had to divert patients and reschedule elective procedures.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center also confirmed an attack that week, however, spokesperson John Howser said a preliminary investigation shows the compromised database did not contain personal or protected information about patients or employees. Ardent has not yet confirmed the extent of data that has been compromised, spokesperson Will Roberts told the Post

Valuable information makes health care a constant target, Wright said.

With ransomware, it’s about the money.

Security breaches are an effect of the health care system’s conversion to electronic health records.

Patients should ask questions about their data.

Health care facilities need to continuously update their security systems to prevent hacks, Wright said.
