ORILLIA, ON – A suspect believed to be behind a string of bomb threats that rattled communities across Ontario in early November has been detained in Morocco.

On November 1, 2023, several schools and public facilities in the province received menacing messages indicating the presence of bombs on their premises. These messages also contained extortion demands for money in exchange for information about the alleged explosives. Importantly, no actual explosives were ever discovered.

Recently, Belgian authorities apprehended an individual in Morocco in connection with a series of bomb threats directed at schools in Belgium earlier this week.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Criminal Investigation Branch, spearheading the investigation in the province, has substantial grounds to believe that the same individual from Morocco was responsible for the threats and significant disruptions experienced here in Ontario.

Collaborating closely with the OPP Cybercrime Investigations Team, the Criminal Investigation Branch is actively pursuing this case and will maintain a strong partnership with Belgian authorities.

It is currently impossible to speculate on whether or when the individual will face charges in Canada. The investigation continues, and further updates will be provided as new developments emerge.
