NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE)- Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn announced on Monday that a couple will face at least two and a half years in prison after they used dating apps to set up robberies.
Luis Santos, 22, and Kerstyn Gross, 23, both pleaded guilty in Fall River Superior Court to the respective charges of three counts of armed robbery, and larceny.
The couple set up a dating profile for Gross across multiple dating apps. According to District Attorney Quinn, they used the profile to set up robberies at least three times.
The first robbery happened in Dartmouth on January 31, 2019. The couple convinced a man that met them on “Meet me” to go out on a date with Gross. She picked the victim up from his house and later pretended to have a flat tire.
When Gross pulled over, Santos jumped out of the woods and threatened the man with a knife and robbed him. The two then drove off, leaving the victim without a phone or cash.
Police were unable to recover any of the stolen items.
On December 28, 2019, the couple set up another date at a New Bedford Dunkin Donuts. They had originally tried to get the victim to meet Gross at their home, but he wasn’t comfortable doing so.
When the victim showed up at the Dunkin Donuts, Santos approached him with a machete and robbed him.
Some of the items that were stolen were recovered by police.
Just two days later, on December 30, 2019, the couple was able to get a third victim to meet with Gross. This time they were able to convince him to meet at their home on Tallman St. in New Bedford.
He got to their place and Gross met him at the door. He recognized her and she invited him in. As soon as he stepped in the door, Santos threatened him with a knife and stole some cash, his cell phone, and his watch.
“It is no surprise that the defendant set up a scam to violently rob the victims. He has a history of violent conduct and was on release for dealing drugs when he committed this crime. He needs to be locked up to protect the public.,” District Attorney Quinn said.
