The concept, known as ‘pig butchering’, involves perpetrators befriending their victims, making up stories before asking for money.

New York State Attorney Letitia James issued a warning about online romance scams being on the rise. She said fraudsters are using dating applications and social media to convince New Yorkers to make bogus payments, mostly in cryptocurrency. The concept, known as ‘pig butchering’, involves perpetrators befriending their victims, making up stories before asking for money.

“New Yorkers who fall victim to these frauds should know they are not alone,” James assured the thousands involved in such scams. It was revealed that two-thirds of the crypto complaints reported to the State Attorney’s office were related to online frauds.
