City offers summer bike safety classes
Children who are preparing to ride a bike or e-bike to school next year are invited to join the Carlsbad Police Department for a free one-hour class emphasizing safety. Officers who are certified bike instructors will cover the basics, including rules of the road for bikes and e-bikes; Carlsbad’s specific e-bike laws; signs and signals; and where to ride in specific situations. Upcoming classes are from 8 to 9 a.m. or 1 to 2 p.m. on: Aug. 7 at Sage Creek High School or Poinsettia Elementary School; Aug. 26 at Valley Middle School or Poinsettia Elementary School; and Sept. 9 at Valley Middle School or Poinsettia Elementary School. ESCONDIDO
District board appoints new trustee
The Escondido Union High School District board recently unanimously approved the appointment of David Vincent as the board member representing Trustee Area 5. He is a co-owner and CEO of VTI Life Sciences, which provides validation services to the pharmaceutical industry. He has also taught in the Master’s in Regulatory Affairs program at San Diego State University. Vincent, his wife, Franora, and three daughters have been Escondido residents for 27 years.
Teens offer children’s workshops
Araceli Ramirez Alonso and Fernanda Sebastian, students at San Pasqual High School and members of the nonprofit Dragon Kim Foundation Fellowship, have planned two free children’s reading workshops as part of a community service project. The workshops will be from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and July 23 at the Mitchell Room at Escondido City Hall. They will be in Spanish and English, aimed at children struggling with reading because Spanish is their first language. Books will also be given away at each workshop. No registration necessary. The Vista Community Clinic is offering routine vaccines — measles, mumps, rubella, pertussis and more — for students as the back-to-school season approaches. VCC encourages parents and guardians to work together to ensure that all students receive the necessary vaccines before returning to school. New MCC program for those on spectrum
MiraCosta College’s Technology Career Institute is launching the Uniquely Abled: CNC Operator Program, specifically designed to provide career preparation and employment opportunities for those on the autism spectrum, including in careers such as Computer Numerical Control machine operators. The institute is hosting two information sessions: The first will be at 10 a.m. Monday via Zoom. The second session will be in person at 6 p.m. July 31 at the TCI campus at 2075 Las Palmas Drive in Carlsbad. This session will allow attendees to meet program representatives and tour the machine shop. The Uniquely Abled: CNC Operator Program is designed to help participants quickly find employment. The curriculum offers classes from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays from Sept. 5 to Dec. 14. Eligible applicants must be 18 or older and have a high school diploma or GED. They must have low support needs and should demonstrate competence in working with machinery and be comfortable in an industrial environment. Student awarded PEO scholarship
Emma Parrish, a Ph.D. candidate at the San Diego State University/University of California San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in clinical psychology, is one of 100 doctoral students within the U.S. and Canada selected to receive the prestigious $20,000 P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Scholar Award from the PEO Sisterhood. She was nominated by P.E.O. Chapter VL of Rancho Santa Fe. Parrish hopes to pursue a career in research and clinical work to increase suicide prevention services for people with psychotic disorders. The P.E.O. Scholar Awards program, established in 1991, provides substantial merit-based awards for women of the U.S. and Canada who are pursuing doctoral-level degrees. Visit peointernational.org.

Comic-Con for educators, librarians
Comic-Con International and the San Diego Public Library present the free Comic-Con Conference for Educators and Librarians. This five-day conference takes place Wednesday through Sunday at the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd., exploring the role comics play in promoting education and literacy for all ages. Those in the library and education fields are invited to presentations and panel discussions to learn creative ways to incorporate comics and other popular arts into their work.
