North Ed informs students, parents about school safety | Local News | #schoolsaftey

TRAVERSE CITY — A tip through the state’s student safety program prompted Northwest Education Services to cancel classes Friday at the Career Tech campus, 880 Parsons Road.

Students had reported hearing discussion of an active shooter situation, but the comments were taken out of context, said officials, who later determined there was no credible threat.

School operations resumed Monday.

The warning through Michigan’s OK2SAY program was what led to the decision “to close the center and all of North Ed’s student programs with the safety of our school community in mind,” an email sent from the school to parents said.

The Career Tech campus includes several educational programs, as well as the Grand Traverse County Youth Health & Wellness Center.

The North Ed message reminded students, parents, and the school community of the gravity of comments that are made. It included a document offering resources and support for students and parents and reaffirming the school’s commitment to keeping students and staff safe.

Also included was information and links to help anyone who experienced anxiety or emotional distress as a result of Friday’s school closure.

The Michigan Department of Education has mental health resources on its site “designed to support a variety of challenges experienced by people of all ages,” North Ed sources noted.

Also, for families looking for a way to talk with children about events involving violence or threats of violence, the National Association of School Psychologists website provides materials; under “Resources and Publications” a parent can select “School Safety and Crisis” and find resources there.

“School safety is a community effort,” North Ed officials wrote, “and we ask that any issue that may jeopardize the health and well-being of a student or staff be reported so that school administrators and law enforcement can respond.”
