Online scams using Google; number of victims in Kerala on the rise | #cyberfraud | #criminal | #cybersecurity | #informationsecurity

Kollam:  Dr. Sainuddin Pattazhi, a teacher at Kerala University, lost all the money in his mobile phone account in a matter of seconds as soon as he clicked on a mail that carried the symbol of Google photos. He kept losing Rs 5 each from his phone account and within a few seconds, he lost all Rs 200 from his account.

Most people who became victims of similar fraud are not ready to file any complaints as the amount of money they lost was mostly small. However, more people are falling prey to such frauds on a daily basis. Apart from the money, people also lose their bank account information along with other private details.

The mail, which carried the Google emblem, said that Dr. Sainuddin’s photo was awarded first place in a competition. As soon as he clicked on the mail to open it, he lost all the information and money linked to his phone account. Even though most people are aware of online frauds, experts say that more number of people are falling prey to these frauds. A woman recently lost Rs 8 lakhs after replying to a fake mail that said that she had won a huge amount from a lottery ticket.

Recently, a lot of people are falling prey to online scams related to E commerce franchises. Scams are done by creating fake accounts similar to that of Amazon and Flipkart. When one clicks on a message that says that they can purchase an expensive phone for a few thousand Rupees if they book it immediately, they will lose their money in a matter of seconds.

Cyber experts claim that only 30 percent of the victims are willing to file complaints against such frauds. In most of the proven cases, Nigerians from cities from Delhi and Mumbai are the culprits. But in most cases, the money cannot be retrieved.

The only way to escape from these scams is to not reply to these emails and messages. Moreover, online shopping should only be done through the respective apps of E-commerce franchises.
