The Orange County Health Care Agency reported the first local death of someone under 18 to COVID-19 — a teenage girl.

A news release issued late Wednesday, Aug. 19, said the Health Care Agency confirmed what it described as a “pediatric death related to COVID-19.” The agency said the case involved a female in her teens “with significant underlying medical conditions.”

Health officials would not disclose the girl’s exact age, where she lived, when she died or the nature of her underlying conditions.

Dr. Clayton Chau, acting county health officer, issued this statement: “We are deeply saddened by this loss of life and send our condolences to her friends and family during this very difficult time.”

The girl is among 833 Orange County residents who have died as of Wednesday from causes related to COVID-19.
