OSHP: 2 citations issued during Lucas Co. school bus safety | #schoolsaftey

LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — Troopers issued two citations to drivers during National School Bus Safety Week in Lucas County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

From Oct. 16-20, OSHP troopers followed 159 school buses during the initiative to ensure drivers were following the proper safety precautions when approaching a bus.

When preparing to stop, school buses display yellow warning lights. And when the bus comes to a complete stop, flashing red lights and a stop sign are displayed.

In a press release Monday, the patrol provided reminders of the laws drivers must follow regarding school buses:

  • Drivers approaching a stopped school bus from either direction must stop at least 10 feet from the bus
  • When a road is divided into four or more lanes, only drivers going in the same direction as the school bus must stop
  • Drivers cannot resume driving until the bus has started moving again

Passing a stopped school bus with flashing red lights means a mandatory court appearance and a possible fine of up to $500.

Most importantly, passing a stopped school bus puts the children of our community at substantial risk,” OSHP said. “Officers will continue to follow school buses throughout the school year to further reinforce school bus safety among the motoring public, bus drivers and students.”

The Toledo Police Department, Maumee Police Division, Sylvania Police Division, Oregon Police Division and Lucas County Sheriff’s Office joined OSHP in the National School Bus Safety Week initiative in Lucas County.
