In what will become known as “The Clipboard Game” around Oxford, Saturday night’s win over South Carolina for the Ole Miss Rebels was a clinic on how to call a game offensively by passing guru himself, Lane Kiffin.
Kiffin sent his playsheet deep into the night twice during the second half, most notably after Matt Corral found a wide open Elijah Moore for a school-record 91-yard touchdown pass. The Gamecocks were mixed up on the coverage and the Rebels made them pay, just one of Corral’s four touchdown passes during the 59-42 victory.
Corral, who said after the game the Rebels knew what the Gamecocks were going to run defensively before every snap, finished with a program record 513 yards through the air and converted several fourth-down throws as Ole Miss shredded South Carolina.
Kiffin’s expert mixture of RPOs, pump fakes and double moves confused Will Muschamp’s defense throughout and led to numerous big plays in the passing game, including the backbreaker late in the final quarter.
