What Caused the Planet Home Lending Data Breach?

The Planet Home Lending data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Planet’s filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on November 15, 2023, Planet Home Lending became aware of a ransomware attack targeting the company’s IT network. In response, Planet Home Lending contained the incident, terminated all unauthorized access, and then began working with third-party data security specialists to assist with its investigation.

Evidently, the incident involved a vulnerability in software used by Planet Home Lending and created by Citrix Systems, Inc.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Planet Home Lending reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, Social Security number, loan number, and financial account number.

On January 24, 2024, Planet Home Lending sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
