A 32-year-old Poinciana man was killed Wednesday in a five-vehicle accident on U.S. 17-92 in Haines City.
The crash took place about 5:30 p.m. near Dyson Road. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the early investigation shows Jalen Gaskins, 23, of Winter Haven was driving a company-owned 2020 Ford F-350 in the outer westbound lane of U.S. 17-92, followed in the inside lane by Terence Gaskin, 39, of Lake Alfred in a Chevrolet Silverado.

Terence had just taken Jalen to pick up the Ford that was purchased by their employer, and they were both heading back to work, the Sheriff’s Office said.
As they approached Dyson Road, about a mile west of U.S. 27, another car had made a U-turn into the right westbound lane in front of Jalen Gaskins. According to the Sheriff’s Office, as Jalen switched lanes to pass the car, he lost control of the truck and slid and rotated, hitting the truck driven by Terence, causing minor damage and no injury.
But the F-350 continued spinning and crossed the median into the eastbound lanes, where it struck a 2008 Subaru Tribeca driven by Yohanmi Mena Lopez, 32, of Poinciana, killing Lopez and sending the Subaru crashing into a shallow ditch.
The F-350 then tipped onto its driver side on the eastbound lanes and was struck by Lopez’s wife, Yomairy Lugo, 33, of Poinciana, driving a 2019 Toyota Rav4. Lugo was later taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released.

A 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Luis Perez, 66, of Auburndale narrowly missed the other crashed vehicles, but left the roadway and crashed into an embankment, the Sheriff’s Office said.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, all drivers were wearing seatbelts. It was not raining when the crash occurred, and it was still light outside. There were several witnesses. The road was closed for about five hours for the investigation, which is ongoing.
Lopez was enrolled at the Polk State College Kenneth C. Thompson Institute of Public Safety law enforcement academy.
