Police resort to animated videos for cyber crime awareness | Pune News | #cybercrime | #infosec

PUNE: The city police, in a novel way, are making citizens aware of various cyber crimes through a series of animated videos depicting the scams on their social media accounts.
So far, the police have put up a video on sextortion which shows a man receiving a request from a woman on social media, who asks him to undress as a part of a game thus trapping him. Another video on loan fraud shows a person being harassed by recovery agents, who have all his details and information, after he falls in the trap of a ‘one-minute loan’ by downloading an app.

“In today’s time, there are many types of cyber crimes where scamsters are using various social media platforms to lure victims. Through these videos, we want to sensitise people and prevent them from falling prey to such crimes,” Pune police commissioner, Retesh Kumaarr said.
“Of the eight videos which are ready, we have released two so far and more are being made. Each video depicts a different online crime, a list of which has been made on the basis of several complaints we receive. A video will be released every three-four days,” the commissioner added.
Praveen Ghadge, who handles the social media accounts of the Pune police, said the concept was prepared by the cyber police but the video-making was outsourced to city-based animators.
“We will also be releasing such videos on matrimonial websites, financial fraud and QR code scams, among others,” he said.
Appreciating complex topics being explained in a simple audio-visual format, Nilesh Gaikwad, a teacher, said, “This is a good initiative not only for senior citizens and youngsters but for everyone, as anyone can be a victim. The videos are a good way to teach youngsters, who are hooked to social media platforms, about how to stay vigilant.”
