Rackspace recovers old emails as customers await answers from ransomware probe | #hacking | #cybersecurity | #infosec | #comptia | #pentest | #ransomware

Rackspace Technology is ready to hand over recovered emails to Hosted Exchange customers who were disrupted during the Dec. 2 ransomware attack, according to a Wednesday status update on the incident.

Rackspace, alongside a number of internal and external experts, worked with the data recovery team to secure access to historical emails.

The company worked for almost three weeks to transition Hosted Exchange customers to Microsoft 365, while also developing a resolution to help customers regain access to older emails where many of them had sensitive data.

Thousands of small- and medium-sized businesses were unable to access email prior to the attack after unknown threat actors gained entry to the Rackspace systems.

The company said it would be contacting customers via email with additional information about how to download and import their historical email data. Rackspace cautioned that not every piece of historical email is immediately available. Additional resources on the company’s data recovery efforts are available here

Rackspace previously said it was close to completing an investigation with CrowdStrike and federal authorities, which were working with the San Antonio-based cloud services firm to recover from the attack.

Rackspace has not yet disclosed whether it was forced to pay any ransom or said specifically how many customers were impacted by the attack. Rackspace said the Hosted Exchange business represents about 1% of its overall revenue, in a regulatory filing.

A couple of class action lawsuits against Rackspace were consolidated in U.S. District Court in San Antonio. The plaintiffs alleged Rackspace failed to protect their personal data.

A spokesperson for Rackspace did not immediately return a request for comment.
