The ransomware gang BlackCat, also known as ALPHV, has openly taken responsibility for the recent cyberattack that targeted the Japanese watchmaker Seiko. The attack, which came to light earlier this month, has raised concerns about data security and the potential impact on the prestigious watchmaker’s operations.
Seiko, a recognized watchmaker with a rich history, found itself in the crosshairs of cybercriminals when an unauthorized third party breached its IT infrastructure. The breach prompted Seiko to issue a data breach notification on August 10, revealing that sensitive data had been accessed or exfiltrated. With over 12,000 employees and a substantial annual revenue of $1.6 billion, the magnitude of Seiko’s operation and reputation underscores the significance of the cyberattack.

“Seiko Group Corporation has confirmed that on July 28 of this year, the Company suffered a possible data breach. It appears that some as-yet-unidentified party or parties gained unauthorized access to at least one of our servers. Subsequently, on August 2, we commissioned a team of external cybersecurity experts to investigate and assess the situation,” Seiko stated in a notice.

The watchmaker expressed its conviction that a breach had indeed occurred, acknowledging that information stored by the company and its subsidiaries might have been compromised. The statement was accompanied by an apology to potentially affected customers and business partners, coupled with a plea for vigilance against potential phishing attempts impersonating Seiko.

A recent development in the situation has come from the ransomware group BlackCat, which on Monday claimed responsibility for the attack. In a display of their involvement, the group released samples of data allegedly stolen during the breach. Among the leaked data are purported production plans, scans of employee passports, plans for new watch model releases, and results from specialized lab tests. The leaked information also reportedly includes confidential technical schematics and Seiko watch designs.

This incident follows closely on the heels of another high-profile cyberattack targeting the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). The BlackCat ransomware group claimed responsibility for compromising data belonging to approximately 2.5 million patients within the NHS’s largest trust, Barts Health NHS Trust, causing widespread concern over the security of sensitive healthcare information.

The cyberattack against Seiko and the subsequent claim of responsibility by BlackCat highlight the persistent and evolving threat posed by ransomware groups.
