ROCHESTER, Minn. – Students at Rochester Community and Technical College now have the chance to fortify digital frontiers and halt hackers.

RCTC has revealed a new cybersecurity degree being implemented next fall.

As cyber attacks become more common, RCTC hopes to add a boost to the workforce.

According to the school, there are over 6,500 job openings in the field in Minnesota alone.

The program will introduce five new classes covering security systems, problem solving, and internships.

Students can earn associate degrees, which can lead to employment right out of school.

Michelle Pyfferoen, the college’s vice president of academic affairs, says the new program will rely on its industry partners to stand out from the crowd.

“What’s going to make our program unique is that connection with business and industry which we’ve established already with our P-TECH partners,” she said. “Mayo, IBM and others come right into those classrooms when our students are 9th and 10th graders so they have a sense of what they’re getting into before they enter a program at the collegiate level.”

The cybersecurity program is the first full degree added to RCTC since aviation was introduced in 2019.

Courses will also be available online. You can visit for more information.
