Resident reports online account hacked and used for fraudulent purchases – Chicago Tribune | #hacking | #cybersecurity | #infosec | #comptia | #pentest | #hacker


The following items were taken from Northbrook Police Department reports, news release records. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.

DUI

Juan Jimenez Fernandez of Waukegan was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol, impeding traffic and improper lane usage Jan. 15. Police stopped Fernandez near the intersection of Dundee and Shermer roads after observing him driving slowly and crossing over the center lane. He failed a field sobriety test. He was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in Cook County Court March 1 in Skokie.

WARRANT APPREHENSION

Carla L. Strunga of Carol Stream was apprehended on a warrant issued in DuPage County for driving with a suspended license Jan. 17. Police stopped her near the intersection of Pfingsten Road and White Pine Drive on a routine traffic matter. A check revealed the outstanding warrant. She was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in DuPage County Court Feb. 24 in Wheaton.

INVALID LICENSE

Vivian Sandoval of Chicago was charged with driving with a suspended license, driving with an expired registration and operation of an uninsured motor vehicle Jan. 13. Police stopped her in the 2800 block of Techny Road after observing the license plates on the vehicle she was driving had expired registration tags. A further check showed her license was suspended. She was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in Cook County Court Feb. 28 in Skokie.

BURGLARY/ATTEMPTED BURGLARY

A person reported an unknown individual or individuals entered their unsecured vehicle while it was parked for five minutes in the 3000 block of Dundee Road and stole a purse containing credit cards Jan. 16.

A person reported several unknown individuals exited two vehicles in the 1900 block of Big Oak Circle Jan. 18 and pulled door handles in attempt to open vehicles. They fled at a high rate of speed, police chased them but they refused to stop.

THEFT

A Northbrook resident reported an unknown individual or individuals stole mail from the resident’s mailbox in the 1900 block of Big Oak Circle Jan. 17. The mail included a check which was fraudulently endorsed and cashed in a different state.

A Northbrook resident reported an unknown individual or individuals stole money from the resident’s unlocked vehicle while it was parked in a driveway in the 1900 block of Big Oak Circle Jan. 19.

FRAUD

A Northbrook resident reported an unknown individual or individuals hacked an online account and fraudulently purchased items Jan. 17. The unknown individual or individuals also changed the personal information on the account.
