WEST TEXAS (KCBD) – A hacker group linked to Russia is suspected of targeting infrastructure facilities in West Texas.
In January, the hackers caused a water tank in Muleshoe to overflow for about 45 minutes, according to United States Cybersecurity Firm Mandiant. The City of Muleshoe took the machine offline and switched to manual operations.
While the attack in Muleshoe took place, two other communities in the area noticed suspicious activity on their networks: Lockney and Hale Center.
Authorities stated the string of events did not affect the drinking water in the towns.
The group claiming responsibility for the attacks is linked to a notorious unit of Russia’s military intelligence agency.
If the group’s involvement is confirmed, this would mark an escalation of Russia targeting critical infrastructure in the United States.
The FBI is working on cases in all three towns.
Muleshoe City Manager Ramon Sanchez stated the city has replaced the system that was hacked.
