CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) –
With the 2023 school year starting next week, the Natrona County School District and the Natrona County Sheriffs office have partnered together to release safety tips for both students and parents as well as the community.
There are 6 safety tips to look out for and to always remember.
Tip number 1 Know the signs- Traffic safety is key to keep both motorists and students safe, be aware of school zones and obey all traffic laws.
Tips number 2 Bus stop safety- When a school bus stops and the lights and stop sign are flashing DO NOT PASS! Buses will make stops even at railroad stops and drivers must be aware.
Tip number 3 Awareness of surroundings- Students who walk to school and cross the streets should look both ways before crossing, don’t stand behind parked cars or bushes that would make it hard for drivers to see students crossing and don’t text and walk. If a student rides their bike to and from home make sure to always wear your helmet and look both ways. Students who drive should avoid driving distracted, such as texting or playing games on your phone.
Tip number 4 Digital safety- Students who are using social media or the internet should be aware of what to look out for. Parents should talk to their child about online expectations and set rules appropriate to their child’s age and to tell their parent if they encounter any uncomfortable situations online.
Tip number 5 Say No, Go and tell- If your child is approached by someone they don’t know at school or on their way home, parents should instruct their child to say “No” and go get a trusted teacher or officer and have the child report what happened.
Tip number 6 Be alert- Much like tip number 3 for both students who drive and community members, don’t drive distracted always keep your eye on the road at all times especially if you need to make an emergency stop.
All 6 tips can help keep both you and your kid safe for the 2023 school year, a more detailed list can be found if you go to the Natrona County School district website to print off.
