June 21, 2023 – San Bernardino County Sheriff Department officials report that on May 25, 2023, deputies and jail medical staff at the West Valley Detention Center discovered an inmate, identified as Nicholas Rodriguez, suffering from a medical emergency. Rodriguez was unconscious and was transported to the hospital by American Medical Response. Rodriguez had several serious illnesses and remained hospitalized.
On June 17, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., Rodriguez was pronounced deceased. Detectives from the Specialized Investigations Division also responded and assumed the investigation, which is ongoing.
Rodriguez was arrested by the Barstow Police Department on June 25, 2022, and was booked for PC 288.5-Sexual Abuse of a Child. He was booked in at the High Desert Detention Center and later transferred to the West Valley Detention Center. Â
