Scammers posing as utility workers to burgle homes in Garland, police say | #coronavirus | #scams | #covid19

Garland police have issued a warning after “several” reports of scam artists posing as city employees and utility workers in an effort to gain entry into residents’ homes.

“While inside the home, the suspect(s) steal cash or jewelry,” the police department said in a recent Facebook post. “No one has been injured.”

Unless you’ve scheduled an appointment ahead of time, don’t let a stranger who says they work for Garland or a utility company inside, police say.

“All utility company or city department employees will wear distinct uniforms, ID badges, and drive identifiable vehicles,” according to the department.

Raúl Rodríguez disinfected Daugherty Elementary in Garland in February to prevent the flu from spreading. A similar strategy was applied for the coronavirus before it forced schools to close.

Throughout the summer, the city has warned residents about similar scams and rumors pertaining to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In one case, police said burglars pretending to work for the city entered a home after convincing a resident their water supply had potentially been infected with COVID-19. There is no evidence that the virus has been detected in public water supplies.

The city has also warned about misinformation and conspiracy theories surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as fraudulent communications claiming to be from Medicare services.

The police department is encouraging residents to contact the respective utility company or city department if an unexpected employee shows up at their home.
