DIMAPUR — Focusing on the protection of child rights and school safety, State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) organised an orientation programme at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) auditorium in Peren town on Friday. The programme was sponsored by the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR).

Speaking at the programme, Dr. Zavise Rume, resource person and SCERT nodal officer, emphasised on the importance of safeguarding children’s rights. He spoke about the necessity of shielding children from all forms of violence, neglect, physical and sexual abuse as well as the significance of creating a secure school environment.

A DIPR report stated that Dr. Rume has stressed on the need for counselling services for children and the essential role of life skills education in ensuring child safety in today’s world, marked by growing mobile and internet addiction. He also urged parents and educators to share equal responsibility in shaping the future of their children.

Dr. Rume also spoke on the Yash Pal Committee of 2009, which advocated for burden-free learning, various forms of corporal punishment, and the Right to Education Act adopted by the government.

He further highlighted the National Education Policy of 2020, emphasising the importance of training children to respond to abuse and creating supportive, emotionally safe environments within schools.

The introductory session was chaired by Samlam.
