The Aiken County Public School District has decided on several district-wide changes to strengthen security measures in schools after an altercation at Aiken High School on Aug. 3. The district released an update on Thursday morning detailing these changes.

Aiken High School will be implementing the following safety precautions: An additional security officer on campus each day; additional fencing to further secure the perimeter; elimination of entry or exit access through classroom wings; addition of a third lunch period to increase the staff-to-student ratio. The school administration is also working with professionals who specialize in behavior modification to review how security resources are being used and to receive suggestions for improvement.

All schools in the district will now be implementing the use of weapons detection units, with elementary schools using them to screen visitors and middle and high schools using them unannounced and at random. Bringing contraband, weapons, or items resembling weapons onto school property will garner severe consequences.

To prepare for detection, students should avoid bringing stainless steel water bottles, metal utensils and scissors. Large metals result in positive detection and necessitate a search. Restriction of these items will be necessary after secondary students return from fall break in mid-October.

The district’s update included a reminder of the district-wide clear bag policy for athletic events. Furthermore, students in the eighth grade or below must be accompanied by an adult 21 or older at all school-sponsored events; high school students who are not accompanied by an adult must be prepared to show a form of ID.
