On the day of the stabbing, a 911 caller reported the victim was “down” and bleeding about 8:30 a.m.

Officers and paramedics performed CPR, but she died at the scene, police said.

“There is no indication there was an altercation before the (woman) was attacked or that she was targeted for a specific reason,” Lt. Steve Shebloski said in a statement. He added that the motive was undetermined.

Investigators used surveillance camera footage to trace the suspect to an area about five blocks away.

Officers and detectives then went door to door until they found and arrested Siliveinusi Patafalai Hamala, 23, on suspicion of murder.

Hamala is expected to appear for an arraignment on Thursday at the San Diego Superior Court, according to online jail records.
