School starts next week. Here’s what Mesquite ISD is doing for COVID-19 protocols | #coronavirus | #kids. | #children | #schools | #parenting | #parenting | #kids

Mesquite ISD students will return to campus on Wednesday, Aug. 11 for in-person classes.

There will be no virtual school this year, as the option was not approved, accredited or funded by the state.

Here’s what the district is doing for COVID-19 protocols.

Masks, vaccines, social distancing

  • Mesquite ISD will not enforce mask wearing, per an executive order issued by Gov. Greg Abbott barring schools from requiring masks.
  • Mesquite ISD is strongly recommending face coverings in indoor settings for all students, staff and visitors.
  • The COVID-19 vaccine is not required, but the district encourages vaccination for all eligible people.
  • Mesquite ISD is encouraging social distancing of at least 3 feet “where feasible,” according to the district’s website.

Quarantine policies

  • Parents and staff will be notified by email when a lab-confirmed case of COVID-19 is reported for their campus or facility.
  • Campus nurses or the director of health services will perform contact tracing and inform anyone who meets the criteria for close-contact exposure. Each case will be handled on an individual basis. Necessary quarantines will be determined at the nurse’s discretion.
  • The district strongly recommends that individuals identified for possible close-contact exposure wear masks for 14 days after exposure, regardless of vaccination status.

Cafeteria, food policies

  • Individual food trays will be prepared for students. Students will not touch trays while in the lunch serving line.
  • Keypads will not be used in the cafeteria this year. Instead, students will scan ID cards or printed cards.
  • The sharing of food or drinks will not be permitted.
  • Food used as a reward or incentive in classrooms or other settings will be allowed when individually packaged and distributed by an adult.

Sanitizing

  • Custodial staff will perform frequent cleaning of all hard surfaces, such as door handles, common tables and desks, shared supplies and other high-touch surfaces and devices.
  • The district will continue to use bipolar ionization equipment, which is installed at every campus, to remove contaminants in the air.
