Sixty-four percent of pedestrian accidents involving kids 14 and under happen Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
I’m not sure this is something I would admit to if I did it, but in a recent survey of North Carolina drivers by AAA, 47 percent admitted to speeding in an active school zone. Another 32 percent admitted to using their phones. If that’s the number that admits to it, imagine the real number. While some Piedmont-Triad districts have already opened their doors, the vast majority of our students return to the classroom Monday, and so too does the chance that at any time, a distracted driver blowing past a stopped bus or speeding through a school crossing, could change the course of not just their life. Think I’m exaggerating? First, slow down. Also, come to a complete stop. Stop signs, whether on the ground or on a bus arm, are not a suggestion. Put down your phone and look up, at all times aware of moms, dad and kids walking or riding bikes, just trying to get to school. These really are simple requests. But when ignored, can have complicated and tragic consequences.
