#schoolsafety | Black Lives Matter, NAACP discuss armed police in South Bend schools | #parenting | #parenting | #kids

SOUTH BEND — When Maya Marosz transferred to Washington at the start of this year, she became a student at the one district high school that does not have school resource officers patrolling the grounds.

Across town, Adams and Riley high schools have South Bend SROs, while Clay High School — which is outside of the city limits but within the South Bend Community School Corp. boundaries — uses deputies from the St. Joseph County Police Department.

Maya, a junior who transferred to Washington after spending two years at John Glenn, attended the “Reimagining Public Safety in Schools” panel discussion hosted by Black Lives Matter, South Bend on Tuesday at the Civil Rights Heritage Center.

The local chapter of BLM, along with the NAACP, have made a push in recent months to get police officers out of South Bend schools.
