See where Connecticut ranks among the most ‘romance scammed’ states | #tinder | #pof | romancescams | #scams

With the advent of the pandemic has come the changing of the dating landscape as we know it.

Sites such as Tinder and Match have all seen an uptick in their usage, with Tinder even reporting a record 3 billion “swipes” in one day last March.

However, just as the number of internet dating profiles has increased, so has the number of romance-related scams.

Also known as “catfishing,” romance-related scams are scams used to solicit either a product or service from a person through the use of either false or misleading romantic interest.

According to data from the Federal Trade Commission, losses related to romance scams reached a record $304 million in 2020 – approximately a 50.5 percent increase from the previous year. It was also reported that people between the ages 40 to 69 were the most likely to fall for a romance-related scam while those over the age of 70 reported the highest median losses.

In Connecticut, 199 romance-related scams were reported in 2020 with a total of $5.6 million being lost in these scams, according to data from the FBI.

According to Social Catfish, a site that serves as a platform for online dating investigations, Connecticut’s losses through romance scams are good for the 25th most in the country.

The state with the most instances of romance scams was California – with 3,110 reported scams totaling $120.4 million. That was more than the following three states (Texas, Florida, Michigan) combined.
