Position Summary:
Senior
Network Engineer will be responsible for providing high-quality, reliable, flexible, and appropriate infrastructure networking technology
solutions for Yeshiva University. These systems will be used campus-wide by faculty, students, and staff in accordance with Yeshiva
University’s academic and research goals. The Senior Network Engineer will work very closely with the Technical Director as well as the
Deputy CIO – Infrastructure in order to properly design and support these systems. The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for all
technical aspects of networking design and implementation.
The Senior Network Engineer will have a strong background in Layer 2
and Layer 3 technologies, work well and communicate effectively with others, is self-starting, creative, and able to think through a project
from start to finish. The Senior Network Engineer is expected to take total ownership of the University’s network infrastructure, from
architecture, design, and documentation through deployment and maintenance.
Position Responsibilities:
Administer network workstations, utilizing TCP/IP networking protocols and/or Windows, Mac and UNIX-based operating
systems:
- Provide leadership in IT for the development of highly appropriate, tightly integrated, consistently available,
secure, flexible, and fault-tolerant systems - Create, architect, develop, and install solutions to complex technical, procedural, and
logistical problems; design, implement, and test information technology security mechanisms and systems in the context of the networking
infrastructure - Identify, test, develop and implement new technologies
- Enhance the integration of disparate, heterogeneous
systems - Appropriately respond to needs and requirements assessments from Information Technology
- Assist in creating and
developing formal guidelines and policies to ensure appropriate systems support and designs - Work with IT staff and appropriate
members of the Academic and Research divisions to provide responsive solutions and options for problems and opportunities - Monitor
the development of new standards with TCP/IP and other networking technologies with particular attention to the impact on the YU networking
environment - Other duties as assigned
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Network Engineer
will also be responsible for all activity related to the smooth functioning of the YU Network. The Network Administrator role has the
primary responsibility for the tasks listed below, and the Senior Network Engineer will act as a tier 2 (final) support. The Senior Network
Engineer will work closely with Network Administrators for the following devices and activities:
- IDF and MDF closet
switches - All WAN Connectivity
- All Routers, Switches and other network devices
- Wireless LAN
connectivity - Configuration and troubleshooting the network components of networked devices
- Network-related help desk
activities - Prompt attention to and timely closure of all network-related helpdesk tickets
WORKING
CONDITIONS
Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Work requires extensive work using a computer.
Responsibilities may require evening and weekend work in response to needs of the systems being supported.
Experience
& Educational Background:
REQUIRED
- At least one certifications: MCSE, CCNA, CCNP,
CCIE - Education: Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or similar
- 5-7 years of experience as a network
systems administrator role
PREFERRED
At least 3 years of experience in the
following:
- Providing customer service and network services to technically adept and inexperienced clients
- Working
with individuals and teams involved in technical support, including system and database administrators, programmers, network technicians
(layers 1-2), network architects (layers 2-7), and information technology consultants - Designing, implementing, operating and
troubleshooting TCP/IP and Ethernet-based network architectures is required. (Time spent as a student during which the individual can
establish her/his responsibility for network implementation and/or operation will be considered.) - Cisco networking hardware
(switches, routers, hubs, bridges, gateways, and optical interface modules) - Cisco’s IOS software
- BGP and OSPF routing
protocols
At least 1-2 years of experience in the following:
- Network firewalls, load balancers, and/or
traffic shapers - Advanced unicast routing technologies (BGP, OSPF) and multiple ISPs
- Working in an environment with
converged, structured cabling systems (analog/digital voice and data) - Assumes responsibility to ensure issues/concerns will be
addressed and monitors them through conclusion - Identifies, defines and analyzes information and situations before recommending a
course of action - Strong communications skills are required. Must be able to explain difficult abstract concepts verbally, in writing
(email, proposals, documentation), and through more formal presentations - Ability to work collaboratively, cooperatively, and closely
with technically adept and involved senior management is required - An ability to perform duties and responsibilities under tight
deadlines is required - Demonstrated ability to work with clients and other staff on all levels – in small groups, one on one with
supervisors, staff colleagues, representatives from external organizations, and vendors is required - Initiative, ability to work
independently, and willingness to learn new skills is required - Act as a consultant to other departments regarding network design and
support - Complete projects and tasks independently and with limited direct supervision
Skills & Competencies:
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
- Knowledge of a range of computer networking systems to include
Ethernet computer networks - Knowledge of computing and network hardware and peripheral equipment
- Ability to communicate
technical information to non-technical personnel - Ability to install, configure and maintain personal computers, networks, and
related hardware and software - Knowledge of federal copyright laws as they pertain to the use of computer software
- Knowledge
of network security systems, applications, procedures, and techniques - Ability to identify and resolve computer system malfunctions
and operational problems - Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities
- Ability to provide technical training to
end users - Ability to learn and support new systems and applications
- Responsibilities may require evening and weekend work in
response to needs of the systems being supported
