Senior romance scams triple | #DatingScams | #LoveScams | #RomanceScans

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Receiving a text message professing undying love made one woman feel not so alone.

But within a short amount of time, the man sending these texts started asking for money.

“In 6 months, 7 months he asked me to send him $10,000,” says the woman. “I told him I did not have it.”

The woman says the man backed off.

But then he started asking her to buy gift cards with money he sent her. And then he said to send those cards back. She had now unknowingly become part of the scammers plan by laundering money for him.

“So a romance scam is the long game for the scammer,” says Timothy Johnston with the Better Business Bureau. “They aren’t looking to get in and out for personal information or financial information. They are looking to develop a relationship to build trust so that way they can take advantage of that relationship.”

Johnston says some red flags include moving from an App where the contact initially occurred, to another form of social media.

“Because they don’t want to be tracked on an actual platform,” says Johnston. The person may profess love very early on in the relationship.

However, the victim will never see the other man or woman in person. Despite promises, and even asking money for a plane ticket, something will ultimately happen, so a face-to-face meeting never materializes.

The person will always ask for money. It may be for travel, or they may have an unexpected bill they need to pay. Johnston says the request for money over and over again can equal tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

By the time the victim understands what’s going on, the person on the other end of the text is long gone.

Johnston says that shouldn’t dissuade the victim from going to authorities. It can be embarrassing, But, he says it may prevent someone else from falling victim to a romance scam.
