New details surrounding the long-awaited arrest of Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell have emerged, as the 58-year-old accused of recruiting and grooming underage girls to be abused by Epstein and his circle is due in court in New York next week.
Some 20 armed agents and officers broke down the door to the 156-acre hidden property named ‘Tucked Away’ on which Maxwell was found on Thursday morning, the Guardian reported, before arresting her.
Maxwell, who was held in New Hampshire’s Merrimack County jail, is set to be transferred to New York in the coming days, where she will appear in court.
The socialite, an associate and confidante of Epstein, was arrested on Thursday morning and faces six charges, including helping to transport and groom underage girls to be abused by Epstein, and in some cases, was “present for and participated in the sexual abuse of minor victims,” the indictment said.
Her arrest came almost a year after Epstein’s arrest, and follows months of investigations by the FBI.
She faces 35 years in prison if convicted.
Maxwell’s arrest is a major breakthrough following Epstein’s death by suicide last August while he awaited trial on federal sex trafficking charges. Following his death, prosecutors vowed to go after co-conspirators, although Maxwell laid low for months. Prosecutors in New York, as well as lawyers representing Epstein victims including Gloria Allred, have put pressure on Prince Andrew to come forward with any information about Epstein’s conduct, although they say he has failed to cooperate.
Maxwell’s close ties with Prince Andrew came under fresh scrutiny on Saturday, after a photograph emerged of her and actor Kevin Spacey sitting on thrones at Buckingham Palace. The picture, taken in 2002, was first reported by the Daily Telegraph and, according to the paper, Maxwell and Spacey had been invited into the throne room by Prince Andrew. The royal, who stepped down from senior duties last year over renewed interest in his friendship with Epstein, has denied any wrongdoing. But victim Virginia Roberts Giuffre alleges that she was made to have sex with the royal on three separate occasions. Andrew denies ever having met Giuffre, despite a widely circulated photograph showing him posing beside her when she was 17. Separately, Giuffre last year filed a civil lawsuit against Maxwell, claiming that the socialite recruited her.
What to watch for
Whether fresh details about the investigation emerge on Tuesday, when ousted prosecutor Geoffrey Berman testifies before the House Judiciary Committee. Berman, who oversaw the investigation that led to Epstein’s arrest, was sacked by Trump last month, with Democrats accusing the President of firing him over his investigations into Trump associates including Michael Cohen and Rudy Giuliani.
