Zonta Club met April 28 via Zoom, hosted by Melissa Olivero. The March meeting had been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
President Kim Radek introduced the speaker for the evening, Sara Sefried, Director of Human Trafficking Services, Center for Prevention of Abuse, Peoria, IL. Human Trafficking is made up of Labor trafficking and Sex trafficking, and it is the second largest crime now, earning a $150 billion dollars profit per year. Illinois is ranked ninth biggest trafficking state in the United States. Forty six of the 102 counties in Illinois have trafficking. People don’t have to be transported for it to be trafficking; that’s called smuggling.
The International Convention to be held in Chicago in July has been canceled. District Conference in Joliet to be held Oct. 11-13 is questionable, but if it is held, La Salle-Peru will be assigned to plan one event. Will the club be able to hold its Buckets of Love event in October?
Nominations chairman, Barb Bryant, announced that two people had been nominated to fill vacancies on the Board. They are Gina Balestri and Amanda Beard. They were approved by unanimous vote. They will take office in June.
The May meeting will be held on Zoom May 26. The club meets the fourth Tuesday of the month except in July and August. Zonta International is a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy.
The La Salle-Peru Club is part of Zonta International and is one of the longest existing clubs. It has been in existence for 95 of Zonta International’s 100 years.
