Shadow Creek safety Maurice Williams commits to UH football | #schoolsaftey

The University of Houston picked up a football commitment Friday night from Maurice Williams, a four-star safety from Shadow Creek.

Williams had been a 2024 commitment to LSU, but in a social media post said, “that it is in my best interest to stay home and play at the University of Houston.”

“I feel like it was the better fit, the better vibe for me,” said Williams, who visited the UH campus this week. “The person I want to become and the life I want to live, honestly, everything is here in Houston.”

A 6-1, 200-pound rising senior, Williams had 21 offers, among them Michigan, Southern Cal, Texas A&M, TCU, Oregon, Arkansas, Nebraska and Florida State. He is rated the No. 8 safety and No. 110 overall prospect in the nation, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Williams said UH’s commitment to player development, the proximity to family in Third Ward, and the school’s transition to the Big 12 were all factors in his decision.

“They are a big up-and-coming school,” Williams said. “That’s something I want to be a part of. That I was a part of building this.”

Williams announced his commitment to LSU last June, the Tigers’ first for the 2024 class.

“That was a very tough decision,” he said. “It was a long process. It wasn’t something I just decided overnight. It was a stressful process for me. LSU is a great program. The history speaks for itself. It was a tough process trying to see what decision I was going to make. I feel much better now that everything is finalized. I’m happy with the decision I made.”

Williams is UH’s fourth commitment for the class of 2024, joining Shadow Creek edge rusher Zion Taylor, Angleton safety Jaden Pettway and Austin Westlake wide receiver Heath McRee.
